Record a browser tab as MP4 with no watermark

Updated

Install Takelight, click its icon on the tab, choose Record this tab and press Stop. You get an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio on your computer, with no watermark and no account. Video recording is part of Pro, with 7 days of Pro that need no card.

Needs Edge 116 or newer. No account.

Four steps

  1. Open the page you want to record, then click the Takelight icon in the Edge toolbar.
  2. Choose Record this tab. A recorder page opens in a new tab. Click rings and shortcut keys are on by default, and tick Blur sensitive info if the page shows emails or card numbers.
  3. Press Start recording and switch back to your tab during the 3 second countdown. Pause and resume are on the recorder page.
  4. Press Stop and save. The MP4 appears on the Recordings page, where you can play, rename, trim and download it.

What is on the file

The video is H.264 with AAC audio, so it plays in a browser, on a phone and in most editors. Nothing is added to the picture: no logo in the corner, no outro. Takelight writes the file to disk as it records, so if Edge crashes the next recorder page offers Recover last recording. The last few seconds may be missing.

A recording has no cap on length.

Where the Takelight name still appears

Not on the video. Step guides carry no watermark either. Pro lets you add your own logo.

What it cannot do

Takelight grows from user feedback, so if one of these limits blocks you, say so on the roadmap page.

For a comparison with a hosted recorder, see Loom free plan limits. To turn the same recording into written steps, read how to create an SOP by clicking through the task.

Questions

Does Takelight put a watermark on the video?

No. The recording has no watermark. Step guides carry no watermark either.

Is the file really an MP4?

Yes, with H.264 video and AAC audio. If your computer cannot encode H.264, Takelight saves WebM instead and says so before you start.

Is recording free?

Video recording is part of Pro. The 7 days of Pro are free, and a Pro recording has no length cap.

Does it record the sound from the tab?

Yes. Takelight can capture tab audio and your microphone, with a 3 second countdown, pause and resume.
